Objectives:
This study aims to describe the medium-term outcomes of hybrid THR in cats, using a CFX Biomedtrix femoral stem in combination with a micro BFX acetabular cup.
Methods:
Retrospective case study of cats who underwent hybrid total hip replacement between April 2020 and September 2023. Medium term follow-up with the feline musculoskeletal pain index score. Complications were recorded as catastrophic, major, and minor.
Results:
Fifteen cats underwent hybrid THR, including two bilateral. The median age at surgery was 24 months. In sixteen cats a size 3 CFX stem was implanted and a size 2 was used in the remaining cat. Femoral head 8mm + 0 was used in 13 cases and in 4 a 8mm+2 was placed. A 12mm BFX acetabular cup was used in all cases. Radiographic follow (mean of 45 days post-surgery) demonstrated unchanged implant position. At the time of recheck no lameness (grade 0/5) was reported in 11 cats and mild (Grade 1/5) lameness in 4 cats. No complications were reported. Owner reported follow up was available for 8 out of 15 cats. The mean FMPI-sf score was 2/36.
Conclusions:
In cats, hybrid THR with CFX femoral stem and micro BFX acetabular cup has a low complication rate and good medium-term outcome. In dogs, hybrid THR has been demonstrated to have a lower overall complication rate. These results suggest a similar reduction in complication rate may be seen in cats compared to cemented THR.
