Medial humeral epicondylitis in Maine Coon cats based on computed tomography findings: a cross-sectional study.

Objectives:

Medial humeral epicondylitis (MHE) is reported with 10% frequency in a postmortem study of 60 domestic shorthair cats (DSH). The objective of this study is to evaluate whether MHE is associated with the Maine Coon (MC) breed by evaluating computed tomography (CT) features that affect the medial epicondyle (ME) and the origin of the flexor carpi ulnaris muscle (FCU).

Methods:

MHE was diagnosed by reassessing both elbows on CT scans of MC, DSH and other breeds (O) cats performed for unrelated conditions between 2016 and 2023. CT scans were obtained with a third generation dual-source CT (192x2 DSCT), including total body post-contrast exam. Age, sex, breed, weight, BCS, indoor/outdoor and other concomitant elbow pathologies (ECP) were recorded. Appearance of the ME (irregular margins IM, sclerosis SC, thickening); number and size of calcified bodies; thickening and contrast enhancement of FCU were obtained.

Results:

210 cats were included (70 for each group). The O group involved Birman (21.4%), British Shorthair (18.6%), Chartreux (20%), Persian (20%) and Siamese (20%) cats. The frequency of MHE in MC, DSH and O was 61.4%, 34.3%, and 22.9%, respectively. MC showed a higher probability of having MHE (OR=6.11, IC 95% 2.13-17.6) compared to DSH. Compared to other cats, affected MCs were younger [median value (IQR): 81 months (55.5) vs 153.5 (55.75), p<0.001)] and showed IM (right 93% vs 62.5%, p=0.002), SC (both right and left 69.8% vs 40%, p=0.012) and ECP (32.6% vs 10%, p=0.026) more frequently.

Conclusions:

MCs showed a higher probability of developing MHE compared to other breeds.
