Canada West Veterinary Specialists is looking for a Board-certified Small Animal Surgeon or Residency trained veterinarian to join our surgical department.
Established in 1997, our 18,000 sq ft hospital is a privately-owned multi-specialty referral practice which is also VECCS Level 1 certified and an identified trauma center in British Columbia combined with a dedicated 24-hour Emergency hospital facility. Our practice has boarded-specialists in internal medicine, oncology, neurology, diagnostic imaging, critical care and surgery with added services of rehabilitation therapy and in-house reference lab.

The position comes with a competitive salary, health insurance, continuing education allowance, and licensure allowance.
Preference will be given to candidates who are ACVS or ECVS board-certified surgeons, however individuals who have completed surgery residency training will also be considered. British Columbia is one of the rare provinces in North America allowing board certified European Specialists to work under a “Specialty Private Practice” license without ECFVG certification/equivalence requirement.
Our Surgery department seeks a qualified and experienced Surgeon competent to do the following:
- Provide primary care of hospitalized surgical patients.
- Perform general and advanced orthopaedic and soft tissue surgical procedures.
- Responsible for ensuring all clinic staff members are adhering to proper pre-, peri- and post-operative care of patients.
- Supervise and mentor veterinary technicians and patient care assistants.
- Proficiency in utilization of specialized surgical equipment.
- Conduct post-operative rechecks and order of medical treatments as necessary to ensure surgical recovery.
- Significant experience with interventional radiology procedures, common orthopedic procedures, complex fracture repair, oncologic surgery, and all aspects of minimally invasive surgery is required
- Participate in continuing education (lectures, journal clubs, seminars).
Required Skills:
- Excellent verbal and written English language skills, especially to a diverse range of audiences and settings.
- Must possess excellent communication skills with clients, staff and referring veterinarians and be motivated to grow our Surgery department.
- The ability to make decisions, delegate responsibility and achieve results with hospital team members.
- Professional comportment and appearance, with excellent interpersonal skills and a friendly, positive attitude.
- Will provide evening and weekend on-call services.
- Work collaboratively with other departments on patient centered care.
- Must be self-motivated and have a desire to teach and train doctors and support staff.
- Must thrive in a fast pace environment.
Education and Credentials:
- Doctorate of Veterinarian Medicine or equivalent degree
- Candidates must be board-certified (ACVS or ECVS) or residency trained (and eligible to sit for board examination) in Surgery.
