The Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences at the University of Tennessee, College of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for a full-time tenure or clinical track faculty position in small animal soft tissue, orthopedic surgery, or a combined soft tissue/orthopedic surgery position. Depending on qualifications and experience, the position is at the Assistant Professor or Associate Professor level. Requirements include the DVM/VMD or equivalent degree and completion of a formal surgery residency or certification by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS) or the European College of Veterinary Surgeons (ECVS).

The successful candidate is expected to engage in the departmental mission by participating in the teaching, service, and scholarship programs of the College. Responsibilities include clinical, didactic, and laboratory teaching of small animal surgery to professional students, interns, and residents; participation in continuing education at local and national levels; providing mentorship to residents; and contributing to the clinical or basic science research program.

Faculty within the small animal surgery section currently include three ACVS board-certified surgeons; three ACVS residency-trained veterinarians; four surgery residents; three neurosurgeons (DACVIM-Neurology); three neurology residents; two sports medicine specialists (DACVSMR); one sports medicine resident; four anesthesiologists (DACVA); three anesthesia residents; four ophthalmologists (DACVO); three ophthalmology residents, and one dentist (DACVD). Current equipment available for use in surgery includes an endoscopic tower, LigaSure device, ultrasonic aspirator, continually updated equipment for thoracoscopic and laparoscopic surgery, stenting, arthroscopy, total hip system, and a full complement of implants, including plating, pinning, external fixation, circular fixation, interlocking nails, and 3-D printing capabilities. Equipment and operating space are also available for interventional radiology techniques, which are currently performed at the University of Tennessee.

The Small Animal Clinic is equipped to provide state-of-the-art surgical and medical service, teaching, and research. The facilities and equipment of the Small Animal Clinic support 24 specialties and include surgical and therapeutic lasers, 128 slice computed tomography unit, 1.5 Tesla MRI, nuclear medicine, video endoscopy, intraoperative fluoroscopy, lithotripsy, and DEXA scanning. Also available to the surgery service are a fully developed nutrition service, a regenerative medicine laboratory, four emergency and critical care specialists, an Instron materials testing machine, and an on-site 3D modeling and printing laboratory. The hospital has a state-of-the-art rehabilitation facility with 3 underwater treadmills, a therapeutic exercise pool, a hyperbaric oxygen chamber, many wound management modalities, and a fully equipped gait analysis laboratory with kinetic and kinematic testing capability.

The University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine boasts a collegial environment committed to mentoring new faculty to be successful in their academic career. This includes a Master Teaching Program, which provides resources, programs and leadership to support the highest quality of professionalism and instruction within the various educational missions of the college, and a Veterinary Social Work program that provides training and support in the areas of communication and conflict management, compassion fatigue, animal-related grief and bereavement, and mindfulness-based stress reduction. New faculty are assigned an experienced faculty mentor and the Department has an excellent record in helping clinical faculty successfully earn promotion and tenure.

The University of Tennessee Veterinary Medical Center is adjacent to UT Gardens, the state botanical garden of Tennessee. The campus is located in Knoxville, TN, in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
