The Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences in the College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking an Equine/Large Animal After-Hours Surgeon for the Veterinary Teaching Hospital at Washington State University. The term of the initial appointment is negotiable but will not be less than one year.  The appointment may be renewed. Responsibilities include the supervision and instruction of students, interns, residents and technicians during after-hours large animal medical and surgical emergencies, and instruction and supervision of students on the large animal emergency/ICU rotation.  Opportunities to participate in teaching labs, conduct collaborative research with other faculty, and provide CE on a local and/or regional level exist and can be incorporated into position expectations.  Some of the clinical duties may involve teaching and surgery service responsibilities during the day, as well.  Individuals finishing their third year of an equine surgery residency and board-eligible applicants are encouraged to apply. The equine section at Washington State University is comprised of 3 surgeons, 3 internists and 3 theriogenologists, all of whom are diplomates of their specialty, and 6 residents and 3 interns.

Qualifications:  The candidate must possess a DVM or equivalent degree, have completed residency training at date of hire, and have a demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with a diverse group of people in a team atmosphere.  Preferred qualifications include ACVS or ECVS specialty certification; experience in clinical and lab instruction/teaching; supervision of house officers and technical staff; and emergency surgical and medical experience, including colic surgery.

In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate’s current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position. Protected board study leave is available for applicants not yet board-certified and is negotiable at the time of hire.
